First Impressions With Runescape

Cabal 2 is a new MMORPG that has been hyped up quite a bit by both media and players alike. With the game now out, it was time to put it to the test and see what it’s really like. And this is my journey.

 

Starting Out

 

There are actually a couple of things I want to talk about here. First off is the launcher. Cabal 2 employs the same mechanism some other MMOs are using lately, where you can play the game before it’s fully downloaded (and it will continue downloading in the background). This lets you get in the game much faster than with traditional methods, and is just something I feel more games should be utilizing.

 

Next up is the class choices, as you’ll see in the following image:


If you look near the middle of the image, you’ll see a little chart that shows the class’ effectiveness in each area (melee, range, defense, attack speed, healing power). These make picking a class that fits your personal play style the best much easier. In my case, I went with the Force Archer, because I like archers (though they are considered as glass cannons in this game – strong ranged attack and range, but low defense and no healing power).

 

With the class chosen, it’s time to customize the character and pick its name. As you might expect, there are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to customization, letting you create the perfect fit for your own style. For players like me (that like to just throw random things together and see how they look), Cabal 2 does employ the randomization feature. Just click it to your heart’s content until you find something you like, or go in and set up specific details!

 

Getting Up and Running

 

With the character created, it’s time to jump in the game. After a cut scene (which can be skipped or watched), you’re instantly thrown into a battle against a large number of enemies. While this lets you quickly learn how to fight, it also brings about a situation I disliked a lot: you don’t have a break after spawning to set your quick slot keys. In my case, I prefer to play using mostly the keyboard, so using the number keypad is important. While it may be possible to set this while in the middle of the fight, it shouldn’t be a necessity. And while it might be a minor issue to some, it’s quite awkward changing from the normal method of controlling characters in a MMO to being thrown in this alternate setup (even temporarily).

 

Questing

 

With the first battle out of the way, it’s time to go do some questing. This leads to another awkward part of the game. “F” is the key that’s used for a lot of game interactions – talking to NPCs, progressing through dialogues, etc. What it doesn’t do, however, is automatically pick the first (or only) quest in a NPCs offering. For this, you actually have to click the quest name. it would be much more efficient if the hotkey would also select the first quest so you can just rattle through them if you have no interest in reading any of them, and just want to pick up everything and move on.

 

On the bright side, getting to NPC and mob locations is swift and easy. In fact, all you have to do is click on the objective in the quest task list and you will run there automatically. I even tried to get stuck on various obstacles, and the game will intelligently path around them. It’s not a huge deal for quests where you don’t walk too far, but in those where you do, this cuts out a lot of manual running so you can do something else.

 

Mounts – Early On and Awesome!

 

The first mount in the game is earned early on, a beautiful multi-colored ostrich. While it’s fun to ride and it helps get places faster, there is a feature I can’t stress enough love for, which comes when mounting is merged with the quest pathing… get ready for it.

 

When you have a mount “equipped” (basically, it’s ready to use) and you use the quest auto pathing, your character will automatically get mounted before running to the next location! Since mounting is instant, this is a great feature. You don’t have to keep mounting up after each enemy kill or anything – just let the game do it for you! This in itself is one of the best parts about the game – they have taken the time to make things easier and more efficient.

 

Customization Above the Rest

 

With each level gained, there are points that can be allocated to a large number of different stats (like accuracy, boosting all attack types, critical accuracy, healing power, and more). These are one of the ways that let you customize characters to your specific play style. And since these are gained with each level, you can fine-tune everything just the way you want!

 

Transformations


I want to point out that I haven’t delved into the transformations (like “Upgrade Core,” “Force Core expansion,” or “Ability Core” transformations) yet. That said, each of these looks to help offer even more choices to players. These all appear to deal with various upgrades, so I plan to get involved with these soon enough!

 

My First Look Opinions

 

So far, I think Cabal 2 has taken into consideration a lot of player issues and has worked to help make things easier to learn, use, and just get rid of a lot of the repetition we often face in games. There’s still a lot to explore, but so far, even the small things have proven to be a great asset in terms of bringing more enjoyment to the game.
