Take A Look At Their Improvements For This Year's Editions with FIFA 16

We have yet to try out what Konami and Electronic Arts have been working for the last several months, but according to PlayStation Access there's something pretty good on its way for our consoles and PC. Let's start with some comments about FIFA 16, then we'll go through PES 2016 to understand if it will be good enough to compete with EA's game.

FIFA 16

Sensible improvements

According to PlayStation Access, which has already tried the game out in its offices, FIFA 16 is not a huge leap forward for the series nor a revolution, something the franchise honestly didn't require. What surprises most, instead, is the quality of the hundreds of small changes and improvements that EA Sports made, that actually let the game feel much better than FIFA 15.These go from the animations of passing to the dribbling skills of footballers, running through the defensive manoeuvers that this year have been a great focus for the developer.

Engine is strong

It is not really clear what PlayStation Access guys meant by saying the engine is strong in this year's FIFA, but my opinion is that it's an overall speech about resolution and frame-rate. FIFA 15 suffers severe frame-rate issues especially on Xbox One, so it's obvious EA Sports put some effort in trying and making the game smoother than possible on the current-gen platforms. I don't think that will come for a cost: FIFA 16 will be a slight but consistent step forward when talking about graphics, too, so expect the maximum EA can do in terms of quality and quantity from this game.

Better defending means (also) better attacking

One of EA's claims for FIFA 16 is that defending is much better than this year's edition, and PlayStation Access confirms that this is true: the game let you defend way better than FIFA 15, unlocking possibly two chances. First: your AI teammates mark and cover spaces much more cleverly, letting you go attacking the opponents that have the ball in a particular moment of the action without fearing there's no one else around. Second: “slide tackle is great”, in PlayStation Access' words, because you have more control over it. As you can tap the X/square button (while playing with the Classic configuration on the pad) a bit after sliding to get the player up from the ground, you are suddenly ready to start another attack on your opponent, and that's what I meant by saying that better defending is better attacking in FIFA 16. I only hope the game doesn't turn to be too faster than this year's.

PES 2016

Talking about PES 2016, we have very few details at the moment but the game will be playable at Gamescom in just two weeks, so we will surely have more element to discuss about in the short period. In Koln, PES will have to confirm as the best sports game in the show, an award that it conquered at last year's event. It will try using two main features, one supposed to fill the gap with FIFA, another that builds upon something the series has always achieved in the past years.

Intercepting the ball is much easier

One of the things I always thought Konami had to do better is intercepting the ball. Especially in the midfield, PES 2015 as the previous versions always gave you the idea you could intercept the ball in any moment and start another action towards the area of your opponent, but you never managed to get the ball and do it. This year's PES, according to PlayStation Access, makes this much easier to accomplish and it's a great thing for the franchise as it really needed this. The game flow was way too slow, so it's important there are some elements that can shake things up, make them less predictable and overall more fun.

Feeling the difference

One thing Konami has always made better than Electronic Arts is providing fans with the idea they are actually controlling the best players in the world. In PES, you really feel the difference between a technician player and another who is not that good in handling the ball: for example, you can clearly see you're controlling Zlatan Ibrahimovic instead of AC Milan's Daniele Bonera, because you do better things and in a much more easier way. Only for a few years on Xbox 360 and PS3 PES didn't manage to deliver this, and those games are not going to make video games history at all…

With both titles releasing in the second half of September, we look forward to play FIFA 16 and PES 2016, and then tell you our opinion about their quality. Surely enough, FIFA is still ahead when talking about gameplay and feeling with PES, but we would be glad Konami could get back to its old strong position on the market because competition is always a positive factor, and we all need good games to play.
