Then We see a 5 defender formation, We switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation, but any 4-5-1 formation should work. The reason this is important is that in any of the 4-3-3, your wingers are really high up the pitch which makes it easy for the LWB and RWB to cover.
Now the second step is to go into instructions and tell both CDMs to stay back while attacking. Five defender formations usually depend on turnovers in possession leading to counter attacks and having two guys sitting back really helps with defending those.
Next thing to do is to understand that passing the ball back and switching the ball (crossing to the other side of the midfield) is a viable option. These will open up tons of room for your players. Five defender formations mean that there is one less person in the midfield/attack. Which is why you want to stack the midfield..you get more options to pass and keep possession longer.
Don't be afraid to keep passing until you find an opening. Five defender formations want you to run straight into the wall of CB's and turn it over, but you're too smart for that. Pass it back and find the open man until your opponent gets frustrated and pulls his CB's out of position. This is when you want to start telling your striker to make runs.
This style of play isn't flashy and you probably won't score a ton of goals, but it definitely works and is worth trying if you find yourself struggling.
The 5-2-3 has on two players in the midfield which means that you will have all sorts of options to pass the ball around (more midfield passing, less passing back to defenders).
Last important tip is when making a pass, look around and see where you want your next pass to go. One-touch passing will absolutely devastate this formation. Also, don't be afraid to dribble into space and force your opponent to come to cover you.

FIFA 20 Formations Tips for 4-2-3-1
Strengths: The deeper lying CAM's allow you to create plenty of chances and with three creative players in here you're going to be a real menace to any opposition. 2CDM's means you have plenty of cover at the back (providing they have decent work rates). The CF and CAM's give the side some width meaning you can still play with a target man up front. The CF and CAM's should be players with high touch, vision, and creativity. 2 CDM's mean that the full-backs with high attacking WR's can push forward more and give an overlap option. This increases the number of crosses you get in but be wary of tiredness affecting your full-backs if you intend on playing this way
Weaknesses: The considerable downside to this set-up is only having the lone forward lowers the chances to use the 1-2 pass, which is a hugely effective way of playing. Wide areas are a problem sometimes with this set-up, especially as your CAM's and CF will lean towards playing in the center of the pitch. Another problem can be caused by having high attacking work rate full-backs who will push forward too much leaving a lot of space at the back, especially if one or both of the CDM's are going forward too. FIFA 20 Formations 5-3-2
Strengths: The most solid of the five at the back formations in terms of defensive set-up and overall structure. This is mostly down to the extra CM, which in turn means the team shape has a better balance and can usually match other teams in midfield with the defense again being very hard to break down. If you have two quick forwards with good stamina, you can still pose opposition defenders lots of problems.
Weaknesses: Lacks the natural width playing with 3 CM's who needs to be balanced in terms of work rates. If the 3 CM's sit deeper, then options in the box are also limited. This is so the ST's aren't isolated for the entire game as it will be easy to defend against. The defensive work rates aren't as vital for the CM's, but if they can provide some cover to the back five then obviously it will make you harder to break down. More information click here
