Item Rarity

Normal items (also called base items) are the "default" state of items without any explicit modifiers/affixes. Some specific base types have implicit modifiers.
Magic items can have 2 Modifiers; a Prefix and a Suffix.
Rare items can have up to 6 Modifiers; 3 Prefixes and 3 Suffixes.
A unique item has a predetermined list of modifiers.

More powerful and dangerous enemies are more likely to drop rarer Items.

Exalted Orb

An Exalted Orb is used to make Rare items better by adding a new random affix. This means it adds one extra modifier to the item, without changing anything else. If the modifier already exists on the item, it will not be added again.

Exalted Orbs can be found almost anywhere in the game. You can get them from monsters, chests, destructible objects, or strongboxes. While they are common in Path of Exile 2, they are one of the most useful items for improving gear.

A Chaos Orb removes one random modifier from a rare item and replaces it with a new random modifier. It is commonly used to remove unwanted modifiers from otherwise strong items.

Gold

Blacksmith's Whetstone

A Blacksmith's Whetstone improves the quality of a martial weapon. Martial Weapons can be used to Attack. Axes, Bows, Claws, Crossbows, Daggers, Flails, Maces, Quarterstaves, Spears, and Swords are Martial Weapons.

Each 1% of quality on a martial weapon increases its physical damage by 1%. You can use a Blacksmith's Whetstone to boost a weapon's quality up to a maximum of 20%, making it much stronger in combat.

Arcanist's Etcher

An Arcanist's Etcher improves the quality of a wand, staff, or sceptre. The maximum quality you can reach with this item is 20%.

For sceptres, each 1% of quality adds 1% more Spirit, making them more effective for Spirit-based abilities. However, for wands and staves, no additional effects from quality are currently known, but improving their quality may still be helpful for other uses.

Armourer's Scrap

An Armourer’s Scrap is used to improve the quality of armour. Armour includes helmets, body armours, gloves, boots, shields, and foci.

Each 1% of quality increases the armour’s defences by 1%. The higher the quality, the stronger your armour will be at protecting you from damage. The maximum quality is 20%.

Catalyst

Catalysts are obtained from Breach encounters. Catalysts can add special quality types to rings and amulets that enhance the magnitude of modifiers of a specified type. These quality types replace other quality types.

Glassblower's Bauble improves the quality of a flask. Flasks gain 1% more Life and Mana recovery per Quality. Flasks can be used to recover your Life or Mana. Flasks are not consumable, but require charges to use. Flask charges can be regained by killing enemies.

Checkpoints and Wells completely refill Flasks when activated. Flasks can only hold charges while in a Flask slot.

Gemcutter's Prism

A Gemcutter's Prism is used to improve the quality of a skill gem, up to a maximum of 20%. Skill Gems or equipment that grant Skills grant a specific bonus to their Skill based on their Quality.

The bonuses from quality vary depending on the skill gem. For example: Lightning Arrow: Higher quality lets it fire beams at more nearby enemies. Power Siphon: Higher quality increases the chance to gain an extra Power Charge on a kill.

Vaal Orb

A Vaal Orb corrupts an item with unpredictable results. When an item is corrupted, one of the following outcomes will apply at random.

Non-unique equipment

(25%) No change.
(25%) Reroll up to three modifiers.
(25%) Adds a special Vaal enchantment to the item.
(25%) Adds an item socket to martial weapons and armour, ignoring socket limits. For caster weapons, ±10% to Quality, up to 23%.

Gems

(25%) No change.
(25%) Permanently add or subtract one gem level. This is retained when upgrading the gem level using an uncut gem. Max level gems can exceed their normal maximum this way, but cannot go below Level 1.
(25%) Add or remove a socket.
(25%) ±10% to Quality, up to 23%.

Flasks and charms

(100%) ±10% to Quality, up to 23%.

A Scroll of Wisdom is used to identify unidentified items, revealing their modifiers so you can use or sell them.

Orb of Transmutation

An Orb of Transmutation is used to upgrade a normal (white) item into a magic (blue) item, adding 1 guaranteed modifier. This makes it a useful tool for creating better items early in the game.

A stack of 10 Transmutation Shards will automatically combine into an Orb of Transmutation. Transmutation Shards can drop anywhere in the game or be obtained by disenchanting magic items.

Regal Orb

A Regal Orb upgrades a magic (blue) item into a rare (yellow) item. When used, it keeps the current modifiers on the item and adds one new random affix.

Regal Orbs work only on magic items. They not only add an extra modifier but also turn the item into a rare.

A stack of 10 Regal Shards automatically combines into a Regal Orb. Regal Shards can drop anywhere in the game or be obtained by disenchanting rare items.

Orb of Alchemy

An Orb of Alchemy upgrades a normal (white) item into a rare (yellow) item. When used, it guarantees the item will have four random modifiers.

These orbs are commonly used during the early stages of the game to upgrade good normal items into rares. They are also helpful for upgrading a normal Waystone, which provides a large item quantity bonus, or for upgrading strongboxes to improve their drops.

For crafting high-end rare items, players rarely use Orbs of Alchemy. Instead, it’s more efficient to start with a good magic item and use a Regal Orb to turn it into a rare. However, Orbs of Alchemy remain valuable for quick upgrades during progression.

Orb of Chance

An Orb of Chance can randomly upgrade a normal (white) item into a unique (orange) item, if a unique version exists. However, it can also destroy the item in the process, so use it carefully. This makes Orbs of Chance a fun but risky option for crafting unique gear!

Orbs of Chance cannot be used on items that have no unique versions or only have drop-restricted unique versions. If you try, you’ll get an error saying, “Item cannot increase in rarity.” The likelihood of success depends on the rarity of the unique item—rarer uniques are much harder to obtain.

A stack of 10 Chance Shards will combine into an Orb of Chance. Chance Shards can drop anywhere in the game or be obtained by disenchanting unique items.

Artificer's Orb

An Artificer's Orb adds a socket to a piece of armour or a martial weapon. These sockets can be used to hold runes or soul cores, which add enchantments to the item.

Runes and soul cores provide offensive modifiers to martial weapons and defensive modifiers to armour. Once a rune or soul core is placed into a socket, it cannot be removed, so choose carefully before socketing.

Body armours and two-handed weapons can have up to 2 maximum sockets
Other types of armour and martial weapons can have up to 1 socket
Some unique items have additional sockets beyond the normal limit
An additional item socket can also be added as result of corruption, such as using a Vaal Orb, bypassing the usual limit.

A stack of 10 Artificer's Shards combines into an Artificer's Orb. Artificer's Shards are obtained by salvaging items with sockets and have specific restrictions on how or where they can drop.

Mirror of Kalandra

A Mirror of Kalandra is the most valuable and rarest currency items in Path of Exile 2. It allows players to create a mirrored duplicate of any non-unique, non-corrupted, and non-mirrored item.
