What Are Legacy Runes in Diablo 4

Legacy Runes are a Season 15 feature inspired by Diablo II. They are used as components for Runewords and can be upgraded through specific Horadric Cube recipes.

Blizzard describes Season 15 as a celebration of Diablo’s 30-year history, bringing classic characters, locations, enemies, and loot concepts into Diablo IV. The season also adds Legacy Uniques and other systems designed around Diablo’s history.

The important point is that Legacy Rune crafting does not simply let you combine any three runes into the next one. The available recipes follow a specific progression, and there are gaps where certain runes cannot be directly crafted.

That makes knowing the complete recipe chain particularly useful when managing your inventory.

How Legacy Rune Crafting Works

The basic process is straightforward: open the Horadric Cube, place the required runes and, where necessary, the specified gem inside, then select Transmute.

The early part of the crafting chain follows a three-for-one structure:

·3 Tir → 1 Eth

·3 Eth → 1 Ith

·3 Ith → 1 Tal

·3 Tal → 1 Ral

·3 Ral → 1 Ort

·3 Ort → 1 Thul

·3 Thul + Chipped Topaz → 1 Amn

·3 Amn + Chipped Amethyst → 1 Sol

This is where the first major crafting limitation appears. The progression stops at Sol because Mal cannot be crafted directly from Sol through the Cube.

This distinction matters when planning long-term farming. Rather than assuming every low-tier rune can eventually be converted into any high-tier rune, players should treat each available recipe as a separate step in the crafting economy.

Mal Is the Major Break in the Chain

After Sol, the crafting system changes considerably.

Mal cannot be produced through the preceding three-rune recipe. Instead, Mal must be obtained separately before you can continue with the higher-tier recipes.

Once you have Mal, the next recipes are:

·2 Ist + Flawless Ruby → 1 Vex

·2 Vex + Flawless Emerald → 1 Ohm

Which Runes Should You Keep

The answer depends on your current build and Runeword plans.

Low-level runes should not automatically be discarded. If you repeatedly find Tir, Eth, Ith, Tal, Ral, Ort, or Thul, they can contribute to your crafting progression. Chipped Topaz and Chipped Amethyst are also relevant because they are required for the Amn and Sol recipes.

At the higher end, Mal, Ist, Vex, Ohm, Lo, Ber, and Jah deserve more careful inventory management. These runes represent later stages of the crafting chain and can become important components for specific Runewords.

Blizzard has previously established Runes as a gear-customization system in Diablo IV, with socketed combinations creating additional effects.

Why Jah Is an Important Long-Term Target

Jah represents the end of the currently listed Legacy Rune crafting chain. Reaching it requires multiple stages of Rune conversion, as well as specific gems for the later recipes.

That makes Jah less of an incidental drop and more of a long-term crafting objective. If your build requires a Runeword using Jah, planning the entire progression in advance can prevent unnecessary spending and reduce wasted materials.

Season 15 also continues to expand crafting options around powerful equipment. Blizzard confirms that Rune Crafting remains one of the available methods for creating Mythic Uniques, alongside the Horadric Cube and Blacksmith systems.

Legacy Rune crafting gives Diablo 4 Season 15 a distinctly classic Diablo flavor while adding another layer to endgame resource management. The most important detail is the break at Mal: early runes can be upgraded through a clear chain, but Mal must be acquired before the higher-tier progression continues.

For efficient farming, keep useful runes and required gems instead of automatically converting everything into Diablo 4 Gold.
