We have all been there. You load into a high-stakes Diamond Dynasty Ranked match, only to find your opponent rolling out a lineup entirely composed of 99-speed slap-hitters. This small-ball exploit is the most frustrating strategy in MLB The Show 26. Left to the CPU’s default defensive AI, these players will drag-bunt their way into a run before you can even record an out, turning every inning into a frustrating battle for MLB The Show 26 Stubs.

If you are tired of losing to opponents who refuse to take a real swing, it's time to fight back. Following the deployment of Game Update 10 (Patch 10), the physics engine gives you the exact tools to shut down this style of play completely.

1.Master the Manual Infield Shift

Relying on the game's automatic "Bunt Defense" setting is a trap; it leaves massive gaps on the right side of the infield that drag-bunters love to utilize. You must manually override the positioning of your corner infielders and middle defenders to suffocate the running lanes before the pitch is even thrown.

As soon as a speed threat steps into the box, hit Down on the D-Pad before the pitch to pull up your Defensive Shifts

PositionShift SettingTactical Purpose
1st & 3rd BaseBring InPlaces corners right on the grass line to eliminate the lead-time of a drag bunt.
2nd Base & SSInfield InForces the middle infield to charge immediately, taking away the "push-to-second" exploit.

2.Exploit Patch 10 Pitching: Jam the Hands

You cannot pitch a bunter the same way you pitch a power hitter. Low-and-away sliders or low sinkers are exactly what a drag-bunter wants—they redirect the ball's momentum perfectly into the grass. With Patch 10's strict emphasis on H/9 (Hits per 9 Innings) attributes altering contact variance, you want to bring in high H/9 relievers and attack specific high-friction zones.

The Meta-Counter: Spam the Up-and-In Cutter or Four-Seam Fastball riding right up into the batter's hands.

The Physics Exploit: Forcing a bunter to make contact with high-and-tight, high-velocity pitches completely neutralizes the flat-bat physics of a bunt. Instead of a soft rolling grounder, the ball violently deflects off the handle of the bat, generating a weak Infield Pop-up. Because your infield is already shifted "In," this results in an effortless catch and an immediate double-play opportunity.

3.The Catcher Pop-Time Counter

If an opponent does manage to sneak onto first base using this method, do not panic. The current style of play dictates that they will almost always attempt an aggressive manual steal on the very next pitch.

To combat this, utilize a manual Pitchout (Hold LB/L1 + A/X) on the first pitch to the subsequent batter. With the game’s overhauled Pop Time attribute, utilizing a high-defense catcher combined with a pitchout will completely override the runner's jump animation. Throw down to second cleanly, and you will slide-tag the runner right out of the inning.

Stop playing passive. Shift your infield, attack the hands with high heat, and force your opponents to actually learn how to swing.
