Diablo 4 Season 15 introduces Soul Splinters as a major part of build customization. Each one offers a powerful bonus, but also comes with a drawback. The best choice depends on how your build deals damage, manages resources, and survives.
Since Season 15 has not launched yet, these recommendations are based on the current PTR and may change before the live release.
Best for: Most builds
Black Soulstone is one of the safest choices on the PTR. Killing enemies lets you build stacks that increase your damage, making it especially effective when clearing large groups.
Warlock summon builds can get even more value because summons can help generate the effect during combat. This allows some Warlock setups to build stacks very quickly.
Its main weakness is single-target content, where there are fewer enemies available to build stacks.
Recommended for: General farming, fast clearing, and most builds.
Best for: Critical Strike builds
Anguish increases Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed, making it a natural choice for crit-focused builds.
The drawback is a 30% increase to Primary Resource costs. Builds with strong resource generation can handle this much more easily, while resource-hungry setups may struggle.
Recommended for: Crit builds with reliable resource management.
Best for: Non-crit, DoT, Overpower, and some summon builds
Hellfire can provide up to 100%[x] increased damage, but reduces Critical Strike Chance to zero.
That makes it a poor fit for traditional crit builds, but extremely attractive for builds that do not depend on critical strikes.
Recommended for: DoT, Overpower, and other non-crit setups.
Sin increases Maximum Life while reducing Maximum Primary Resource. It works well for builds that naturally stack health and have enough resource generation to handle the penalty.
Some Barbarian, Druid, and Warlock builds can make good use of it.
Mother provides Unhindered and makes enemies Vulnerable when you touch them. This makes it useful for aggressive melee builds that constantly move through enemy packs.
The drawback is a four-second Stun after touching enough enemies, so Unstoppable can be especially valuable.
Pain provides strong Damage Reduction but reduces Movement Speed by 30%.
It is better for defensive or stationary builds than highly mobile characters.
Lies is mainly a farming option. It improves Gold, crafting material, and Experience gains, but leaves you permanently Weakened and Vulnerable.
Use it for safer farming rather than difficult endgame content.
Damnation increases Monster Power after killing Elite Packs. It is more useful for players who want to push harder content than for normal farming.
Crit Build: Black Soulstone + Anguish
This gives crit builds strong damage scaling, Critical Strike Chance, and Attack Speed. Make sure your resource generation can handle Anguish.
Non-Crit or DoT Build: Black Soulstone + Hellfire
This combination focuses on raw damage and avoids relying on Critical Strike Chance.
Warlock Summon Build: Black Soulstone
The stacking mechanic can be particularly effective with summons, making it one of the most interesting choices for this playstyle.
Fast Melee Build: Mother + Anguish
Mother provides mobility and Vulnerable application, while Anguish adds Attack Speed and Critical Strike benefits.
Defensive Build: Pain + an Offensive Soul Splinter
If survival is your biggest problem, Pain can provide valuable damage reduction. Just be prepared for the movement speed penalty.
Use Lies when Gold, materials, and Experience are more important than maximum combat power.

Soul Splinters make Season 15 different from Season 14. Instead of simply chasing stronger Diablo 4 items, players have to decide which drawback their build can tolerate.
A powerful bonus is only useful when your build can take advantage of it. Hellfire is a good example: losing Critical Strike Chance is a major penalty for a crit build, but much less important for a build that never relies on crits.
For now, Black Soulstone, Anguish, and Hellfire are the key Soul Splinters to watch on the PTR. However, Season 15 is still in development, so numbers and interactions can change before launch.
Use these recommendations as a starting point, then adjust your Soul Splinters around your actual build, resource generation, survivability, and the content you plan to play.
