Diablo 4 Season 15 is adding the Rebirth system, a useful quality-of-life feature for players who regularly come back for new seasons. Instead of creating a completely new character every time, you can take an existing Eternal character and turn it into a Seasonal character while keeping its class, name, appearance, and several cosmetic preferences.

The important part is that Rebirth does not carry your old progression into the new season. Your character goes back to Level 1, so you will still need to level up, rebuild your skills, earn Paragon progression, and find new gear.

How Rebirth Works

The basic idea should feel familiar to anyone who played Diablo 3. You select an eligible Eternal character and use Rebirth to convert it into a character for the current season.

After the conversion, the character starts at Level 1 and follows the normal seasonal progression. You are essentially starting a new seasonal journey, but you don't have to recreate the character's name, appearance, or cosmetic setup.

That also means Rebirth is not a shortcut to the endgame. Your old combat progression does not come with you, so a fully geared Eternal character will still have to be built up again after entering the season.

What Does Rebirth Keep?

The main benefit of Rebirth is that it preserves the identity of your character. Your class, name, and appearance remain the same, while your Normal or Hardcore mode also stays associated with the character.

Several cosmetic options are kept as well, including:

Transmogs 
Pigments and dyes 
Mounts and mount accessories 
Pets 
Portal effects 
Headstones

The character's Hours Played is also carried forward. If you continue using the same character for multiple Rebirths, its total playtime will keep accumulating instead of starting over with every new season.

For players who have spent a lot of time with one character, this is probably one of the nicer details of the system.

What Gets Reset?

The actual gameplay progression is reset when you use Rebirth.

Your character returns to Level 1, and previous level and Paragon progression are no longer available. Your previous skill progression also has to be rebuilt as you level through the new season.

Your gear and inventory are reset as well. This includes equipment that was being used by the character and Diablo 4 items that were sitting in its inventory.

Materials and other character-specific resources that are part of the reset should also be treated as something that will not carry into the new seasonal progression.

So while the character looks and feels familiar, the gameplay side is essentially a fresh start.

Move Your Items to the Eternal Stash First

This is the part players should pay the most attention to before using Rebirth.

If there is anything on your character that you want to keep, move it to the Eternal shared Stash before confirming the reset. Check both your equipped gear and inventory, then make sure the items are actually stored safely in the Stash.

The game warns you that items left on the character will be removed during the Rebirth process. Because of that, it is worth taking a few minutes to clean everything up before confirming the conversion.

If you have valuable gear that you want to use on an Eternal character later, or materials that you don't want to lose, don't leave them sitting on the character when you start Rebirth.

How to Prepare for Rebirth

The preparation process is fairly simple. First, check all of the equipment your character currently has equipped, then go through the inventory and move anything important to the Eternal Stash.

After transferring everything, check the Stash again and make sure the items are there and that you have enough space for anything else you may want to save.

Once the character is cleared, go to the character selection screen and select the Eternal character you want to rebirth. Choose the Rebirth option and read through the confirmation screen before accepting the reset.

After the process is complete, the character becomes a Level 1 Seasonal character and can begin progressing through the current season.

Diablo 4 Rebirth vs Diablo 3 Rebirth

Players who have used Rebirth in Diablo 3 will immediately understand the general idea behind the Diablo 4 version. Both systems allow you to reuse an existing character instead of deleting it and creating another character whenever a new season begins.

The handling of equipment is an important difference, though. Diablo 3 had a system for dealing with the equipment associated with a rebirthed character, while Diablo 4 requires players to move anything they want to keep into the Eternal Stash before completing Rebirth.

That makes the preparation step particularly important in Diablo 4. If you have a large collection of gear or materials on an Eternal character, it is worth checking everything before you confirm the reset.

Who Should Use Rebirth?

Rebirth is mainly aimed at players who have a favorite character they want to keep using from season to season.

When Is Rebirth Available?

The Rebirth system is being introduced with Diablo 4 Season 15 and is currently available for testing through the 3.2.0 PTR.

The system is designed to let eligible Eternal characters enter the current season at Level 1 while preserving their class, name, appearance, and supported cosmetic information.

Since the feature is being tested on the PTR, smaller details can still change before the final Season 15 release.
