Jewelry has always been an important part of endgame builds in Diablo 4. Rings and amulets provide key stats, while sockets give players another way to fine-tune damage, defense, and utility.

The current system works well, but it can become predictable once a build is fully established. Players often know which stats, gems, and upgrades they want. That is why Soul Splinters are one of the more interesting systems to watch heading into Season 15.

Built around the idea of “Power with a bite,” Soul Splinters are designed to give players stronger effects while also introducing meaningful drawbacks. If the system is balanced well, it could make socket choices much more important than they are today.

Current Jewelry and Socket System

Rings and amulets remain important equipment slots because they can fill major gaps in a build. Depending on the class and setup, jewelry can provide offensive stats, defensive bonuses, resistances, resource-related effects, and other useful bonuses.

Sockets add another layer of customization. Players can use gems and other socketable Diablo 4 items to adjust their characters around specific needs.

SystemMain PurposeWhat Players Care About
RingsOffensive and defensive bonusesUseful affix combinations
AmuletsBuild-defining stats and effectsStrong rolls and build synergy
GemsAdditional character bonusesMatching gems to the build
TemperingAdds specific affixesGetting useful rolls
MasterworkingImproves existing statsWhere to spend materials

The biggest weakness is that these choices can become increasingly similar in the late game. Once a build reaches an established setup, there may be little reason to experiment.

Tempering and Masterworking

Tempering and Masterworking have made gear progression more interesting, but they also increase the pressure on resources.

Tempering lets players add specific affixes, while Masterworking improves existing stats through additional investment. A strong piece of jewelry can therefore become much more valuable after several successful upgrades.

The problem is deciding where those resources should go.

If a ring is already performing well, spending more materials on a small improvement may not be as useful as upgrading another weak item. This creates a constant trade-off between improving an existing piece and investing in a completely different gear slot.

For established builds, the best choice is often the mathematically efficient one rather than the most interesting one.

The Problem With the Current System

The main issue is lack of meaningful risk.

Most traditional upgrades simply make your character stronger. There is usually no reason to accept a serious drawback in exchange for additional power.

That can make late-game optimization feel repetitive. Players find the correct combination, improve the rolls, and continue chasing slightly better versions of the same setup.

Soul Splinters have the potential to change that formula by making players think about both the benefit and the cost of an upgrade.

What Are Soul Splinters?

Soul Splinters are a Season 15 system built around the concept of “Power with a bite.”

The basic idea is straightforward: a powerful effect comes with a cost.

Soul Splinter FeatureWhat It Could Mean for Builds
Positive and negative effectsMore meaningful gear decisions
Different raritiesDifferent levels of power and value
Upgrade potentialAdditional progression
Build interactionStronger focus on synergy
Risk versus rewardMore room for experimentation

Instead of automatically choosing the biggest bonus, players may need to consider whether they can handle the associated drawback.

That is a very different decision from simply replacing one gem with another.

How Soul Splinters Could Change Builds

The biggest impact could be on build optimization.

A high-damage build might be willing to sacrifice some defense because it already has enough survivability. A fragile build could prefer a weaker effect if its drawback is easier to manage.

This means the same class could potentially have several reasonable Soul Splinter choices depending on how the rest of the build is designed.

There could also be interesting interactions with Tempering, Masterworking, and Mythic Uniques. A drawback that looks terrible on its own might become manageable when another part of the build naturally covers that weakness.

That encourages players to think about the entire character instead of optimizing every item separately.

Should You Prepare for Season 15?

There is no need to stop upgrading your current character.

If a jewelry upgrade makes your build noticeably stronger, it is still worth taking. However, I would avoid spending huge amounts of resources chasing extremely small improvements if the character is already performing well.

Instead, start thinking about your build's weaknesses. How much defense can you sacrifice? Which stats are flexible? Which mechanics can compensate for a drawback?

Those questions could become much more important once Soul Splinters arrive.

It is also a good time to clean up your stash and remove gear you no longer need before starting the new season.

Soul Splinters could give Diablo 4's socket system a much-needed change in direction.

The current jewelry system provides plenty of customization, but late-game choices can become predictable. Soul Splinters introduce a more interesting question: how much power are you willing to trade for a weakness?

Whether the system succeeds will depend on the strength of the effects and the severity of their drawbacks. If the balance is right, Soul Splinters could create new build options instead of simply becoming another mandatory system.

For now, there is no need to over-prepare. Keep improving your current character when the upgrades are worthwhile, but avoid wasting resources on marginal gains.

Once Season 15 goes live, the real test will be which Soul Splinters are worth using, which drawbacks can be managed, and whether they genuinely make endgame builds more diverse.
