Choosing the right formation is one of the most important decisions you can make in EA FC 27. Your formation determines how your team occupies space, creates passing options, defends against counters, and builds attacks.

There is no single formation that works for every player. Some formations focus on possession and midfield control, while others are designed for fast counter-attacks, wide play, defensive stability, or overwhelming the opponent with numbers in attack.

In this FC 27 formations guide, we cover the major formations currently available, with a quick explanation of what each setup offers and which style of play it best suits.

Tip: Formation alone does not determine your results. Player Roles, Build-Up Style, Defensive Approach, and the individual qualities of your players are equally important.

1. 4-2-1-3

The 4-2-1-3 is one of the most attractive attacking formations in FC 27, combining three forwards with a central attacking midfielder and a double pivot. It provides excellent attacking width while still giving you two midfielders to protect the defense.

FC 27 Formations/Tactics Part 1

Best for: Balanced attacking football, pressing and creating chances from wide areas.

2. 4-4-1-1

The 4-4-1-1 gives you two compact defensive lines while placing a supporting attacker behind the striker. It is particularly useful if you want a formation that can transition quickly from defending to attacking.

Best for: Balanced play, counter-attacks and defensive organization.

3. 4-3-1-2

The 4-3-1-2 focuses heavily on central areas, with three midfielders and a CAM supporting two strikers. It is excellent for short passing and combination play around the edge of the box.

Best for: Central attacks, quick combinations and possession.

4. 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow

The 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow is one of the strongest formations for controlling the center of the pitch. Its narrow shape creates many short passing options and allows the CAM to connect the midfield with two strikers.

Best for: Possession, central passing and two-striker attacks.

5. 4-2-3-1 Wide

The 4-2-3-1 Wide is one of the safest all-round formations in FC 27, thanks to its two defensive midfielders and three attacking midfielders. The wide players can stretch the opposition while the double pivot provides protection against counter-attacks.

Best for: Possession, defensive stability and controlled attacking football.

6. 4-3-3 Attack

The 4-3-3 Attack provides excellent width and aggressive attacking options. With wingers supporting a central striker and three midfielders behind them, it is ideal for players who like to attack from the flanks.

Best for: Wing play, pressing and aggressive attacking football.

7. 4-4-2

The classic 4-4-2 remains one of the easiest formations to understand and use. Two strikers provide constant attacking options while four midfielders offer natural defensive and offensive balance.

Best for: Beginners, balanced football and direct attacks.

8. 4-3-3 Holding

The 4-3-3 Holding adds additional defensive security through a dedicated holding midfielder. This makes it a good option for players who want the width of a 4-3-3 without leaving too much space in front of their center-backs.

Best for: Possession, defensive stability and wide attacks.

9. 4-1-2-1-2 Wide

The 4-1-2-1-2 Wide combines the central structure of a diamond with wider midfield options. It gives you more width than the Narrow version while maintaining a strong central presence.

Best for: Balanced possession and flexible attacking play.

10. 4-2-3-1

The traditional 4-2-3-1 offers a strong defensive foundation with two deeper midfielders and a CAM operating between midfield and attack. It is a highly flexible setup that can be adapted to possession or counter-attacking football.

FC 27 Formations/Tactics Part 2

Best for: Control, defensive balance and patient build-up.

11. 4-4-2 Holding

The 4-4-2 Holding focuses more heavily on defensive structure than the standard 4-4-2. The midfield remains compact, making it useful when you want to protect the center of the pitch.

Best for: Defensive organization and counter-attacking football.

12. 4-1-4-1

The 4-1-4-1 gives you five midfield players while keeping one striker high up the pitch. The holding midfielder protects the back four and allows the other midfielders to move forward.

Best for: Midfield control, possession and defensive security.

13. 4-3-3 Defend

The 4-3-3 Defend is a more conservative version of the classic 4-3-3. It provides strong midfield protection while retaining the width of two wide attackers.

FC 27 Formations/Tactics Part 3

Best for: Defensive stability, possession and controlled transitions.

14. 4-3-2-1

The 4-3-2-1 uses two narrow attacking players behind a central striker. This creates a compact attacking structure that works particularly well for quick combinations through the middle.

Best for: Central attacking play and quick passing.

15. 4-2-2-2

The 4-2-2-2 is built around two defensive midfielders, two attacking midfielders and two strikers. Its compact structure makes it particularly effective for fast transitions and attacking through the center.

Best for: Counter-attacks, quick transitions and central overloads.

16. 4-3-3

The standard 4-3-3 is one of the most recognizable formations in football. It gives you natural width, three midfielders and a central striker, making it a flexible option for both possession and attacking play.

Best for: Wide attacks, possession and pressing.

17. 4-5-1 Flat

The 4-5-1 Flat puts five midfielders between the defense and the lone striker. It can make the center of the pitch extremely difficult for opponents to penetrate.

Best for: Midfield control, defensive stability and protecting a lead.

18. 4-2-4

The 4-2-4 is designed to maximize attacking numbers, with four players positioned high up the pitch. It can overwhelm defensive lines but leaves fewer players protecting the midfield.

Best for: Aggressive attacking play and chasing a goal.

19. 4-1-3-2

The 4-1-3-2 combines a defensive midfielder with three attacking midfielders and two strikers. It offers plenty of options through the middle while maintaining a dedicated player in front of the back four.

Best for: Central attacks and two-striker systems.

20. 4-5-1 Attack

The 4-5-1 Attack provides a large midfield presence while giving the attacking midfielders freedom to support the lone striker. It can be effective for players who prefer patient build-up before accelerating into the final third.

Best for: Possession, controlled attacking play and midfield overloads.

21. 5-2-1-2

The 5-2-1-2 combines three center-backs with two wing-backs, two central midfielders, a CAM and two strikers. The formation is particularly effective for counter-attacking football because it provides defensive cover while still offering two players up front.

Best for: Counter-attacks, defensive security and two-striker attacks.

22. 3-5-2

The 3-5-2 uses three center-backs and five midfield players, with wing players providing width. It can dominate the midfield but requires disciplined defending when the wide players move forward.

Best for: Midfield control, possession and attacking through wing-backs.

23. 3-4-2-1

The 3-4-2-1 combines a back three with two central attacking midfielders behind a lone striker. It creates multiple passing options between the lines and can be very difficult to defend when used aggressively.

Best for: Possession, attacking combinations and high-pressure football.

24. 3-4-1-2

The 3-4-1-2 is another three-at-the-back system featuring a CAM behind two strikers. The central structure makes it excellent for quick combinations, although the flanks require careful management.

Best for: Central attacking play and combination football.

25. 5-3-2

The 5-3-2 prioritizes defensive stability while keeping two strikers available for counter-attacks. The three central midfielders provide additional protection and allow the team to transition forward quickly.

Best for: Defensive football, counter-attacks and protecting a lead.

26. 5-4-1

The 5-4-1 is one of the most defensive formations available. Five defenders and four midfielders create a compact block that is difficult to break down, although the lone striker can become isolated.

Best for: Defending a lead, absorbing pressure and counter-attacking.

27. 5-2-3

The 5-2-3 combines a strong defensive back five with three attacking players. It is useful for players who want to defend with numbers and then quickly exploit space on the counter.

Best for: Defensive counter-attacks and wide transitions.

28. 3-4-3

The 3-4-3 is one of the most aggressive three-at-the-back formations. Three forwards provide significant attacking pressure, while the four midfielders are responsible for maintaining enough defensive balance.

Best for: High-pressure attacking football and wide overloads.

29. 3-1-4-2

The 3-1-4-2 uses a single holding midfielder in front of three center-backs, with four midfielders supporting two strikers. It creates a strong central structure and plenty of passing options but requires good defensive awareness.

Best for: Possession, midfield dominance and aggressive two-striker attacks.

How to Choose the Best FC 27 Formation

The best formation depends on how you actually play rather than simply following the current meta.

If You Like Possession

Try 4-2-3-1, 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow, 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3. These formations give you multiple short passing options and strong midfield structures.

If You Prefer Counter-Attacks

Consider 4-4-1-1, 4-2-2-2, 5-2-1-2 or 5-3-2. These systems allow you to remain compact before quickly sending players forward.

If You Like Wide Attacks

The 4-3-3, 4-3-3 Attack and 4-2-1-3 are excellent choices. They naturally create space on the wings and give your wide players more opportunities to attack.

If You Prefer Defensive Football

Try 5-4-1, 5-3-2 or 4-5-1 Flat. These formations give you more players behind the ball and make it harder for opponents to play through the center.

If You Want Constant Attacking Pressure

The 4-2-4, 3-4-3 and 3-4-2-1 can provide aggressive attacking structures, although they require better defensive awareness because committing more players forward naturally creates space behind them.

There is no universal best FC 27 formation. The strongest setup is the one that matches your players, your preferred build-up style and the way you defend. It is important to build a team that suits your playstyle based on the resources you currently have, such as your FC 27 players and FC 27 coins.

For players looking for a safe starting point, 4-2-1-3, 4-4-1-1, 4-3-1-2 and 4-2-3-1 are excellent formations to experiment with. If you prefer a more direct approach, 4-4-2 and 4-2-2-2 are easier to understand, while 5-3-2 and 5-4-1 are useful when defensive stability is the priority.

Most importantly, don’t judge a formation after only one or two matches. Give your players time to adapt to their roles, test different build-up approaches, and adjust your defensive line according to your opponent.

Choose the formation that fits your team — then build your tactics around it.
