FC 27 SBCs are one of the most important ways to turn unused cards into better rewards. The biggest change this year is that many Player and Upgrade SBCs no longer require traditional 11-player squads with chemistry and position requirements. Instead, FC 27 introduces Item Score, allowing eligible cards to contribute toward a target score. EA also confirms that progress can be completed across multiple sessions and that duplicate eligible cards can be submitted.

That system makes the current SBC cycle particularly interesting. The live SBC list currently includes an 83+ Upgrade, a repeatable 2x 79+ Upgrade, and several other launch challenges. The 83+ Upgrade rewards one Gold Player Item rated 83 or higher, making it a straightforward way to recycle lower-value cards while searching for something useful for an early FUT squad.
The first thing to understand is that the new system is not simply a cheaper version of the old SBC format. EA has separated many Upgrade and Player SBCs from the traditional chemistry puzzle.
With a Simplified SBC, you select eligible Player Items from your club and watch their Item Score increase the progress bar. Once you reach the required amount, you can submit the challenge. EA warns that submitted cards are permanently removed from your club, so the most important part of completing an SBC is choosing the right cards rather than simply reaching the target as quickly as possible.
This changes the way you should think about duplicate cards. Instead of automatically discarding every duplicate or keeping every card because it might become useful later, you can separate your club into three groups: cards you actively use, cards worth keeping for future SBCs, and cards that can safely become SBC material.
The current 83+ Upgrade is particularly attractive during the opening weeks because an 83-rated player can still have meaningful value when your club is developing. However, the reward is not guaranteed to be a high-end starter.
That means the cost of completing the SBC should remain under control. If you already have a large collection of untradeable low-value cards, the challenge becomes much easier to justify because you are converting unused club inventory into another chance at an 83+ player.
The calculation becomes different when you need to buy most of the required cards. Spending valuable early-game resources simply to receive a random 83+ item can leave your squad weaker in other areas.
For players who are already planning their first major upgrades, FC 27 Coins are better used with a clear purpose. Building the core of your starting XI should come before repeatedly spending resources on random upgrade attempts.
The new Item Score system makes it tempting to throw cards into an SBC until the progress bar reaches the required number. That is exactly where you can waste resources.
Before submitting anything, check whether the player has a realistic role in your squad. An 83-rated midfielder with useful pace, passing or defensive attributes may be more valuable to your team than the same rating suggests.
You should also consider whether a card could become useful for a future Puzzle SBC. FC 27 still contains traditional SBCs that can require squad rating, chemistry, leagues, nations and clubs. Not every SBC has been converted into the simplified format.
Keeping a small reserve of players from different leagues and nations can therefore be useful, particularly during the early part of the game when your club does not have much depth.
The current SBC menu also includes a 2x 79+ Upgrade, which provides two Gold Player Items rated 79 or higher and is repeatable.
This type of SBC is useful for building an SBC recycling cycle. Instead of thinking about every challenge separately, you can use lower-rated cards to generate new FC 27 players, then decide whether those rewards should enter your team or go into another challenge.
The important point is to avoid automatically recycling every reward. Some 79–82 rated players can still be valuable in the opening days because their pace, position or playstyle may make them effective starters.
Once your club becomes deeper, those same players become more disposable. Your SBC strategy should therefore change as your squad improves.
High-rated duplicates are one of the easiest ways to make a mistake under the new system.
If you pack an 84 or 85-rated duplicate and have nowhere to store it, an SBC may be a sensible destination. But that does not mean you should immediately submit every high-rated card you own.
Check the reward first. If the challenge only gives you a small upgrade pack, using an expensive duplicate may provide very little value compared with saving that rating for a future Player SBC.
EA specifically recommends checking the Item Score before submitting because greatly exceeding the requirement means you may be sacrificing more club value than necessary.
This is particularly important with the new one-click completion option. Convenience is useful, but you should still review the cards before confirming the submission.
One of the biggest advantages of FC 27’s new system is that you can organize your club around future SBC usage.
Keep your best starting XI untouched. Then maintain a second group of cards that are not currently strong enough to play but have useful ratings. These become your SBC reserve.
When a new Upgrade SBC appears, start with the cards that have the least impact on your current squad. If the SBC requires more Item Score, gradually move into higher-rated duplicates rather than immediately sacrificing players you could use.
This approach becomes even more important as FC 27’s early Ultimate Team content expands. Season 1: Ones to Watch is already underway, while the launch update confirms additional SBCs and campaign content during the opening period.
There are three questions worth asking before every FC 27 SBC.
First, what is the guaranteed reward? A guaranteed 83+ player is fundamentally different from a pack that can contain a much wider rating range.
Second, how much of the cost can come from your existing club? If you can complete most of the requirement with cards you would otherwise never use, the SBC becomes easier to justify.
Third, does the reward actually improve your team? An 84-rated player who does not fit your formation may be less useful than an 81-rated player with the right pace, position and attributes.
This is why blindly following an SBC completion list is not always the best approach. The cheapest solution is only useful if the resulting reward has a purpose.
The new FC 27 SBC system makes squad building faster, but it also makes careless submissions easier. Simplified SBCs remove much of the old chemistry puzzle work, yet the cards you submit are still permanently removed from your club.
For the current 83+ Upgrade, focus on unused cards and sensible duplicates first. Keep players who can still help your starting XI, and avoid using expensive cards simply because the Item Score requirement allows it.
As your club grows, the best SBC strategy will also change. Early on, even an 83-rated player can be useful. Later, that same player may simply become another resource for a larger Player SBC. Understanding that progression will help you get more value from every card you put into the system.
For players looking to strengthen their club outside SBC rewards, EA FC 27 Coins can also become part of the equation, but the priority should remain the same: spend resources where they create a clear improvement rather than chasing every new SBC that appears in the menu.
