Top 10 Hidden Tips Dune: Awakening Doesn’t Tell You

Dune: Awakening is filled with secrets, mechanics, and progression systems that aren’t fully explained, especially to new players. Whether you're just starting out or knee-deep into your survival journey on Arrakis, this guide covers 10 important things the game doesn’t tell you—but absolutely should.

1. Follow the Fremen Questline (Priority Zero)

One of the most important things players miss is not progressing the Fremen questline. This main story unlocks essential systems like Thumpers, tech, and base-building features. Press J and track the "Fremen" section to stay on course. Be sure to complete all 10 trials—they unlock key gameplay mechanics and locations, including the ornithopter.

2. Monitor Zone & Environmental Stats Often

Hit T to view the character status screen—this gives critical info like PvE/PvP zone status, radiation/heat levels, and your protection stats. Pay close attention to the day/night cycle indicator. As it turns blue near dawn, that’s the best time to collect dew water—you’ll get optimal yield for hydration, especially once you unlock industrial dew collectors.

3. Sandworm-Proof Resource Farming

When collecting flower sand or spice, turn off your Holtzman shield by pressing H. This drastically reduces your chances of alerting the sandworm. Once you're in the field, stop all movement and minimize sound between collection actions. Use better-grade compactors for safer, more efficient harvesting. Keep that warning line flat, and the worm won’t bother you.

4. Spice Blows in PvE Zones Exist

You don’t need to risk PvP zones for Spice Blows. They can occur in the Haga Basin and other PvE areas. A single blow can yield up to 500 spice, which is vital for crafting tier 6 items. It’s a great way to prep for high-tier gear without venturing deep into hostile zones.

5. Preview Crafting Stats Before Researching

While browsing the research tree, press Alt while hovering over a schematic to toggle between material costs and final item stats. This helps you make informed decisions, especially when comparing gear focused on melee vs. ranged defense or deciding on buggy upgrades.

Pro tip: You can only repair gear if you’ve researched its schematic. Looted high-tier gear will break if you haven’t unlocked it.

6. Upgrade Machines for Better Efficiency

Refiners and fabricators have massive performance differences across tiers. For example, medium blood refiners offer 40% efficiency vs. 20% from small ones. This means faster progress toward unlocking endgame gear like the ornithopter. Prioritize machine upgrades based on your crafting goals.

7. Use Blood Collector Weapons to Farm Faster

Get weapons like CPO’s Drinker or Caliph’s Drinker to double-dip on blood: once on hit, and again with an extractor. Farm densely populated zones with medium blood bags, and you can return to base with 70+ liters for refining into water.

8. Death Isn't the End (Even to a Sandworm)

If you’re killed by a sandworm, you can recover one lost item via a mysterious NPC called “The Guide.” This often includes your MK1 sandbike, though upgraded parts like special engines are lost. If enemies kill you instead, you can retrieve dropped loot from a skull icon on your map.

Watch out for quicksand. It’s hard to detect and almost guarantees death if you're stuck when the worm arrives.

9. Use Fast Travel to Save Time

Fast travel is available via the ornithopter pilot at trade posts. It costs 700 solar per trip and can save hours when farming between places like Vernelius’s Gap and Pinnacle Station. Even 10 trips are worth it when trying to gather iron, aluminum, or other ornithopter parts quickly.

10. Loot Machinery from Enemy Outposts

Inside enemy outposts and testing stations, you’ll find rare items like complex machinery, cobbled paste, and industrial pumps—all needed for high-tier crafting. Check these places regularly instead of just farming mobs.

Bonus Tip: Some of these rare materials are also sold at Crossroads Outpost, but only buy small quantities to fill in gaps—it's expensive and inefficient long term.

Final Advice: Use the Bank Before Taking a Break

If you're logging off for a while, store valuable items in the bank deposit box located in Araken or Harko Village. This prevents your base from decaying due to unpaid taxes (every 11 in-game days). You can even disassemble your base and store all the resources safely.

Dune: Awakening doesn’t always explain its systems clearly, but with the right knowledge, you can progress faster and survive longer on Arrakis. Whether it’s water farming at dawn, outsmarting sandworms, or maximizing refinery efficiency—these hidden mechanics will give you a serious edge.
