Trial of Chaos is getting a major rework in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5. The new version brings faster encounters, better rewards, Wager Modifiers, and a new 30-room endgame progression. With more Currency rewards becoming part of the experience, managing your PoE 2 Currency efficiently will also be important for players looking to improve their characters.

The biggest change is that Trial of Chaos should no longer feel like one long, exhausting run. You can leave between rooms and come back later, while deeper runs now give you a much bigger reason to keep pushing.

Here is what you need to know before jumping into the reworked Trial.

What Is New in Trial of Chaos 0.5.5?

The new Trial keeps the basic idea of choosing dangerous Modifiers and surviving each encounter, but the overall experience is much smoother.

You can now stop between rooms and resume the Trial later. This is especially useful for longer endgame runs, since you no longer need to complete the entire Trial in one sitting.

Room objectives have also been simplified. More encounters now focus on killing enemies, which should make the overall pace faster and reduce time spent dealing with slower objectives.

The biggest endgame change is the increase to 30 rooms. Difficulty and rewards increase as you go deeper, giving experienced players a much bigger challenge to work toward.

Start With Safer Modifiers

Modifier selection remains one of the most important parts of every Trial.

The easiest rule is to choose the penalty that hurts your build the least.

A character with strong defenses may be comfortable handling certain enemy damage increases, while a fragile build may need to avoid them completely. Fast-clearing builds can also deal with some dangerous effects more easily because enemies do not stay alive for long.

Do not simply choose the Modifier with the biggest reward.

A good Modifier is one that gives you something useful without creating a problem your build cannot handle.

Another important change is that Modifiers now provide Item Rarity bonuses. This makes some choices more attractive because you receive an additional benefit for accepting the extra danger.

How to Use Wager Modifiers

Wager Modifiers add another layer of risk and reward.

They allow you to make a Trial more dangerous in exchange for stronger potential rewards. This gives experienced players more control over how aggressively they want to approach each run.

If you are still building your character or your equipment is incomplete, there is no reason to take every Wager available.

Play safely during the early part of a run. Once your character starts clearing rooms quickly and surviving comfortably, you can consider taking more aggressive options.

A simple rule works well:

If the downside can realistically kill your character, skip it. If you can comfortably handle the downside, the extra reward may be worth taking.

This becomes even more important during the later rooms, where one bad decision can end a long run.

How to Push to 30 Rooms

Do not think about a 30-room Trial as one huge challenge. Break it into smaller goals.

Rooms 1–10

Focus on consistency.

Use this section to build momentum, learn which Modifiers your character handles well, and avoid unnecessary risks. There is little reason to use aggressive Wagers this early.

Rooms 10–20

Start evaluating your build.

If enemies are dying quickly and your defenses feel comfortable, you can begin taking more rewarding options. If you are already struggling, keep things safe.

There is nothing wrong with ending a run before it becomes dangerous.

Rooms 20–30

This is where the real endgame push begins.

Difficulty and rewards continue increasing, so Modifier choices become much more important. Avoid combinations that directly counter your build and focus on clearing each room consistently.

The goal is simple: survive long enough to collect the rewards waiting at the end.

How to Get All Three Trialmaster Fragments

One of the biggest reasons to push deeper into the new Trial is the Trialmaster Fragment system.

Players who reach the later stages can work toward obtaining all three Trialmaster Fragments during a single run. This creates a much clearer progression path toward the Trialmaster encounter.

The safest strategy is not to chase all three Fragments from the beginning.

Build a stable run through the early and middle rooms, then increase the risk once your character has proven that it can handle the difficulty. The ability to leave between rooms also makes longer Fragment runs much easier to manage.

If your character is already struggling, taking your rewards and stopping can be the better decision.

What to Do at Different Progression Stages
Early Game

Keep your Trials simple.

Use lower difficulty levels to learn the new room flow and figure out which Modifiers are dangerous for your build. Your main goal should be getting comfortable rather than reaching 30 rooms immediately.

Mid Game

Once your gear starts coming together, Trial of Chaos becomes a good way to balance progression and rewards.

Start experimenting with Wager Modifiers, but avoid stacking too many risks at once.

Endgame

This is where the new system really starts to matter.

Strong builds can aim for 30-room runs, make better use of Wagers, and work toward collecting all three Trialmaster Fragments in one attempt.

Currency and Soul Cores are also more important to the new reward structure, making successful runs more valuable even when you are not specifically farming Fragments.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake is treating every run like you have to reach the maximum room.

If your build starts struggling, take the rewards you have already earned and stop. A safe run is better than losing everything because you wanted to push one room further.

Another mistake is choosing Modifiers based only on their rewards. Always consider how the penalty interacts with your build.

Finally, do not rush into the hardest content as soon as the rework arrives. Start with a manageable Trial, learn the new system, and increase the difficulty as your character becomes stronger.

Trial of Chaos 0.5.5 is shaping up to be a much more player-friendly version of the activity.

Faster encounters, simpler objectives, leave-and-resume progression, Item Rarity bonuses, Wager Modifiers, and 30-room Trials all give players more control over how they approach the content.

For most players, the best strategy is to focus on consistent clears first. Once your build is strong enough, start pushing deeper toward 30 rooms and work toward collecting all three Trialmaster Fragments in a single run.

The exact details of some mechanics may still be adjusted as the update approaches, but the overall direction is clear. Trial of Chaos is becoming faster, more rewarding, and much easier to manage.
