Pride is one of the most specialized high-end weapon runewords in Diablo 2: Resurrected (D2R). Unlike mercenary weapons designed primarily to maximize the mercenary’s own damage, Pride is built around one powerful purpose: providing the Concentration Aura to dramatically increase the physical damage of the player and nearby minions.
This makes Pride particularly valuable for physical-damage setups such as Bowazons, Whirlwind Barbarians, and Summon Necromancers. The trade-off is significant, however. Pride has no Enhanced Damage modifier, so the mercenary using it will usually deal much less personal physical damage than one equipped with a more conventional damage-focused weapon.
Pride is a four-rune weapon runeword made with:
Cham + Sur + Io + Lo
It can be created in a 4-socket Polearm or Spear, with Spear bases becoming eligible starting with Patch 2.4. The runeword requires Level 67.
Its defining feature is the variable Level 16–20 Concentration Aura When Equipped. Depending on the roll, the aura provides a massive boost to physical damage for the player and nearby allies or minions.
Because the aura is the main reason to use Pride, it is most commonly placed on an Act II Desert Mercenary, allowing the mercenary to provide the aura while the player focuses on dealing damage.

Pride has a long list of modifiers, but the Concentration Aura is by far its most important property.
| Modifier | Value |
|---|---|
| Chance to Cast Level 17 Fire Wall When Struck | 25% |
| Concentration Aura When Equipped | Level 16–20 |
| Bonus to Attack Rating | 260–300% |
| Damage to Demons | +1–99% based on Character Level |
| Lightning Damage | Adds 50–280 |
| Deadly Strike | 20% |
| Hit Blinds Target | Yes |
| Freezes Target | +3 |
| Vitality | +10 |
| Replenish Life | +8 |
| Extra Gold From Monsters | 75–185% based on Character Level |
The most important consideration when choosing a Pride is its Concentration roll. A higher aura level means greater physical damage support for the character and nearby allies.
Pride’s real value comes from supporting damage rather than dealing it directly. Depending on the Concentration roll, Pride can provide roughly +285% to +345% Enhanced Damage to the player and eligible minions. For physical builds, that can represent a substantial increase in overall damage output.
This is why Pride is often more valuable to the entire party or build than its mercenary’s individual damage numbers suggest. For example, a Summon Necromancer may benefit from boosting the damage of multiple physical-damage summons at once. Likewise, a Bowazon can gain a major increase in physical bow damage while letting the mercenary remain in the background.
An Act II Desert Mercenary is a natural carrier for Pride because the mercenary can remain close enough to the player to maintain the Concentration Aura without requiring the player to dedicate a weapon slot to the runeword. This setup is particularly effective for builds where the character’s primary damage is physical.
Physical Bowazon:
A physical Amazon can gain a substantial damage increase from Concentration, making Pride an attractive support weapon when maximizing physical arrow damage is the priority.
Whirlwind Barbarian:
Barbarians focused on physical melee damage can benefit heavily from additional Enhanced Damage, especially when the character is already built around high weapon damage and attack scaling.
Summon Necromancer:
Pride can greatly increase the damage of physical summons. This is one of the clearest examples of a build accepting Pride’s low mercenary damage in exchange for a much stronger army.
The primary advantage is the Concentration Aura. A strong Level 16–20 roll can provide approximately +285% to +345% Enhanced Damage, potentially benefiting the player, mercenary, and compatible minions. For a physical-damage build, this can be far more valuable than simply giving the mercenary another high-damage weapon.
Pride also provides a 20% chance for physical attacks to be uninterruptible. This can improve consistency when fighting enemies that frequently interrupt melee or physical attacks.
The Hit Blinds Target modifier can reduce pressure from ranged enemies, while its other utility modifiers add secondary benefits during combat.
Unlike a runeword designed around a single class mechanic, Pride can support several physical archetypes. Its biggest strength is its ability to improve the damage of an entire physical-oriented setup.
Pride is powerful, but it comes with several major compromises.
The biggest weakness is that Pride provides no Enhanced Damage on the weapon itself. This means the mercenary’s personal physical damage can be surprisingly poor compared with other high-end mercenary weapon choices. Pride is therefore best viewed as a support weapon, not a mercenary damage weapon.
The Freezes Target +3 modifier can cause enemies killed by the mercenary to shatter and disappear instead of leaving a corpse. This can be a significant problem for builds that depend on corpses.
For example, Summon Necromancers may need corpses to create Raise Skeletons or Corpse Explosion opportunities, while Barbarians using Find Item benefit from having corpses available to Hork. As a result, Pride can create an awkward trade-off: more damage from Concentration, but potentially fewer usable corpses.
Pride requires Cham, Sur, Io, and Lo. The major cost comes from the high-value Cham, Sur, and Lo runes, making this a serious investment compared with many other mercenary options. Players should therefore be confident that their build benefits substantially from Concentration before committing valuable runes.
Because Pride does not have its own Enhanced Damage modifier, the weapon base becomes especially important. For a mercenary, an Ethereal base is generally preferred because mercenaries do not consume weapon durability in the normal way. This allows players to take advantage of the higher base weapon damage provided by Ethereal D2R items.
| Base | Type | Main Strength | Overall Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethereal Mancatcher | Spear | Extremely fast attack speed | Excellent |
| Ethereal Thresher | Polearm | Strong speed/damage balance | Excellent |
| Ethereal Giant Thresher | Polearm | Fast with strong reach | Excellent |
| Ethereal Cryptic Axe | Polearm | Higher base damage | Situational |
| Ethereal Colossus Voulge | Polearm | High base damage | Situational |
The Ethereal Mancatcher is one of the strongest modern choices for Pride because of its very fast attack speed. Since Pride itself lacks Enhanced Damage, faster attacks can help the mercenary make better use of its other offensive properties, including:
· Added 50–280 Lightning Damage
· 20% Deadly Strike
· Life recovery and other gear-based effects
· More frequent attacks for applying utility effects
The faster attack rate makes Mancatcher particularly attractive when the goal is to maximize the mercenary’s overall contribution rather than relying exclusively on raw base damage.
Thresher and Giant Thresher remain popular because they offer a strong balance between attack speed, weapon damage, and range. They are excellent all-around choices when you want a Pride base that does not over-specialize in either attack speed or raw damage.
These bases offer higher base damage, but their slower attack speed makes them less attractive for many Pride setups. Since Pride’s primary purpose is its aura and its mercenary damage is already limited by the absence of Enhanced Damage, choosing a slower base solely for higher base damage is often less efficient.
The choice ultimately depends on what you value most from the mercenary.
| Priority | Recommended Base |
|---|---|
| Fastest attack speed | Ethereal Mancatcher |
| Balanced performance | Ethereal Thresher |
| Fast + long reach | Ethereal Giant Thresher |
| Higher base damage | Ethereal Cryptic Axe |
| Maximum base damage focus | Ethereal Colossus Voulge |
For most players specifically building Pride as an aura-support weapon, Ethereal Mancatcher, Thresher, and Giant Thresher are the most compelling options.
Pride should not be evaluated purely by looking at the mercenary’s character sheet damage. A conventional damage-focused weapon attempts to maximize the mercenary’s own DPS. Pride instead sacrifices personal damage in exchange for a powerful aura that can multiply the effectiveness of the entire physical-damage setup.
This distinction is especially important for characters whose own damage already comes from strong weapons, skills, or numerous minions.
| Category | Pride |
|---|---|
| Mercenary Personal Damage | Low |
| Player Physical Damage Support | Extremely High |
| Minion Damage Support | Extremely High |
| Attack Utility | Good |
| Crowd Control | Good |
| Corpse Preservation | Poor |
| Cost | Very High |
| Best Role | Aura Support |
A few principles can make a Pride setup much more effective:
Prioritize the Concentration roll.
Since the aura is the entire reason Pride is used, a higher Concentration level is generally more valuable than chasing marginal differences elsewhere.
Use an Ethereal base.
An Ethereal weapon gives the mercenary higher base weapon damage without creating the usual durability concerns.
Favor fast bases.
Mancatcher, Thresher, and Giant Thresher are attractive because attack speed helps the mercenary get more value from its offensive modifiers.
Build around physical damage.
Pride delivers its largest benefit when the player or minions deal substantial physical damage.
Remember the corpse problem.
Necromancers and Barbarians should account for the possibility of corpses being shattered by Freezes Target.
Pride is one of D2R’s clearest examples of a specialized support runeword. Its lack of Enhanced Damage makes it a poor choice when the goal is simply to maximize an Act II mercenary’s personal DPS, but its Level 16–20 Concentration Aura can dramatically increase the physical damage of the player and nearby minions.
For Bowazons, Whirlwind Barbarians, Summon Necromancers, and other physical builds, that trade-off can be extremely powerful. The Ethereal Mancatcher stands out for attack speed, while Ethereal Thresher and Giant Thresher offer excellent all-around alternatives.
Because Pride requires several valuable D2R runes, it is best treated as a carefully planned endgame investment rather than a general-purpose mercenary weapon. When the build is capable of fully exploiting Concentration, however, Pride can provide an enormous boost to total damage and become one of the most impactful support weapons in Diablo 2: Resurrected.
