Diablo 4 Season 15 adds a new Rune upgrade system that makes lower-tier Runes much more useful for players working toward powerful Runewords. One of the biggest goals for many endgame players is Enigma, which requires three specific Runes: Jah, Ith, and Ber.
The Rune Ladder can help you turn duplicate lower Runes into higher ones through the Horadric Cube. However, the system has an important limitation: the Season 15 Rune Ladder is divided into two sections, and there is no direct upgrade from Sol to Mal.
What Is the Rune Ladder in Diablo 4 Season 15?
The Rune Ladder is a set of hidden Horadric Cube recipes that allows players to combine duplicate Runes into a higher-tier Rune.
The system is similar to the classic Diablo 2 Rune system, where multiple copies of a lower Rune can be combined into a higher Rune. Diablo 4 Season 15 uses the same basic idea but adapts the system to the current Diablo 4 crafting system.
There are 14 Rune upgrade recipes in Season 15.
The lower Rune section uses three copies of the same Rune for each upgrade, while the higher Rune section uses two copies plus a specific Gem.
The important thing to remember is that these are two separate Rune paths:
Tir → Eth → Ith → Tal → Ral → Ort → Thul → Amn → Sol
and
Mal → Ist → Vex → Ohm → Lo → Ber → Jah
There is currently no Sol-to-Mal upgrade recipe. This means you cannot start with Tir and continuously upgrade Runes all the way to Jah. Mal is the starting point of the high-tier section.
Diablo 4 Season 15 Rune Ladder
The complete Rune upgrade recipes are:
| Upgrade | Horadric Cube Recipe |
| Tir → Eth | 3 Tir |
| Eth → Ith | 3 Eth |
| Ith → Tal | 3 Ith |
| Tal → Ral | 3 Tal |
| Ral → Ort | 3 Ral |
| Ort → Thul | 3 Ort |
| Thul → Amn | 3 Thul + Chipped Topaz |
| Amn → Sol | 3 Amn + Chipped Amethyst |
| Mal → Ist | 2 Mal + Flawless Amethyst |
| Ist → Vex | 2 Ist + Flawless Ruby |
| Vex → Ohm | 2 Vex + Flawless Emerald |
| Ohm → Lo | 2 Ohm + Flawless Diamond |
| Lo → Ber | 2 Lo + Grand Topaz |
| Ber → Jah | 2 Ber + Grand Sapphire |
All of these upgrades are performed through the Horadric Cube. The recipes are particularly useful when you have duplicate Runes that are not needed for your current Runewords.
Enigma requires:
Jah + Ith + Ber
In Diablo 4 Season 15, Enigma is a Runeword crafted in the Horadric Cube using a Chest Armor base. The Rune order is Jah, Ith, Ber, and the resulting Diablo 4 items Enigma Chest Armor.
The three required Runes come from very different parts of the Rune system.
Ith is part of the lower Rune Ladder:
Tir → Eth → Ith
If you start entirely with Tir, you need three Tir to create one Eth and three Eth to create one Ith.
That means:
9 Tir = 1 Ith
Ith is therefore the easiest of the three Enigma Runes to build through Cube upgrades.
Ber is near the top of the high Rune Ladder:
Mal → Ist → Vex → Ohm → Lo → Ber
Each upgrade in this section requires two copies of the previous Rune plus a specific Gem.
For example:
2 Lo + Grand Topaz = 1 Ber
Because there is no Sol-to-Mal recipe, the high Rune section cannot be built entirely from low Runes. You need to obtain Mal and then progress through the high-tier ladder.
Jah is the highest Rune currently available at the end of the upgrade ladder:
Mal → Ist → Vex → Ohm → Lo → Ber → Jah
The final upgrade requires:
2 Ber + Grand Sapphire = 1 Jah
This makes Jah especially expensive to create through Rune upgrades. If Enigma is your goal, remember that you need both Jah and Ber, so using all of your Ber Runes for Jah too early can leave you without the Ber required for the final Enigma craft.
The best way to manage your Rune progress is to treat Ith and the high-tier Runes as separate goals.
Ith is relatively easy to build through the lower Rune Ladder.
Keep your extra Tir and Eth Runes rather than spending every low Rune immediately. Once you have enough D4 materials, use the Cube:
3 Tir → Eth
then:
3 Eth → Ith
Once you have the Ith required for Enigma, there is little reason to keep converting additional low Runes specifically for the Enigma project unless you need them for another Runeword.
The high Rune path begins with Mal.
Once you obtain Mal, keep it if your main objective is Enigma. You can then gradually work through:
Mal → Ist → Vex → Ohm → Lo → Ber → Jah
Because every step requires two Runes, duplicate high Runes become important resources rather than something that should be spent immediately.
For example, if you already have one Ber and are working toward Enigma, you should consider keeping that Ber instead of automatically converting it into Jah. Enigma requires both Jah and Ber.
The high Rune upgrades also consume Gems.
The important Gem requirements are:
Flawless Amethyst for Mal → Ist
Flawless Ruby for Ist → Vex
Flawless Emerald for Vex → Ohm
Flawless Diamond for Ohm → Lo
Grand Topaz for Lo → Ber
Grand Sapphire for Ber → Jah
This means Rune farming and Gem management should be considered together when you are pushing toward the highest upgrades.
How to Manage Runes Efficiently
A simple Rune storage system can make the Enigma grind much easier.
Keep the following groups separate:
Enigma Runes
Jah
Ith
Ber
High-Tier Runes
Mal
Ist
Vex
Ohm
Lo
Lower Runes
Tir
Eth
Tal
Ral
Ort
Thul
Amn
Sol
Upgrade Gems
Flawless Amethyst
Flawless Ruby
Flawless Emerald
Flawless Diamond
Grand Topaz
Grand Sapphire
This makes it easier to see which materials you have available before using a Cube recipe.
It also prevents one common mistake: upgrading a Rune simply because you have enough copies, without considering whether that Rune is needed for another Runeword.
How Many Runes Are Needed?
For one Ith:
3 Tir → 1 Eth
3 Eth → 1 Ith
Therefore:
9 Tir → 1 Ith
The high Rune section is much more expensive.
One Ber requires:
2 Lo + Grand Topaz
One Jah requires:
2 Ber + Grand Sapphire
If you already have the required high Runes, the Cube gives you a deterministic way to progress toward the next tier. However, because there is no Sol → Mal recipe, you cannot calculate the entire Jah cost by simply converting Tir upward.
The practical bottleneck is obtaining the Runes needed to enter the high-tier section, especially Mal and the Runes that follow it.
This is the most important thing to remember.
There is currently no Sol → Mal Cube recipe in Season 15.
The low Rune path ends at Sol, while the high Rune path starts at Mal.
Jah requires two Ber.
However, Enigma itself also requires one Ber.
If you already have one Ber reserved for Enigma, make sure you have enough additional Ber before converting them into Jah.
Having enough Runes is not always enough to perform an upgrade.
High-tier recipes also require specific Gems, so keep the necessary Gems in your materials while progressing through the ladder.
Treating Diablo 4 and Diablo 2 Crafting as Identical
Season 15 clearly takes inspiration from Diablo 2, but the crafting system is adapted for Diablo 4.
Enigma is crafted through the Horadric Cube using a Chest Armor base and the three required Runes. It is not created by simply inserting the Runes into a socketed armor item in the traditional Diablo 2 manner.
Enigma Rune Checklist
If Enigma is your endgame target, use this simple progression:
The Season 15 Rune Ladder makes duplicate Runes much more valuable, but players should understand that it is not one continuous path from Tir to Jah.
The lower section ends at Sol, while the high-tier section starts with Mal:
Tir → Eth → Ith → Tal → Ral → Ort → Thul → Amn → Sol
Mal → Ist → Vex → Ohm → Lo → Ber → Jah
For Enigma, focus on securing Ith through the lower ladder while saving and upgrading your high-tier Runes toward Ber and Jah. Keep the required Gems ready, and avoid spending Ber without checking your Enigma progress first.
Once you have Jah, Ith, and Ber, you are ready for the final Enigma crafting step.
