Mercenary’s Lot is a unique pair of Slink Gloves in Path of Exile that dramatically changes how players interact with Marked enemies. Originally introduced as a Heist-specific reward, the gloves later became part of the core unique item pool. Their value comes from an unusual combination of attack and cast speed, increased damage against Marked targets, and a defensive mechanic that transfers part of incoming hit damage to the enemy.
For builds that rely heavily on Mark Skills, Mercenary’s Lot can provide both strong single-target pressure and an additional defensive buffer, making the gloves particularly interesting for boss encounters and specialized PvP scenarios.

Mercenary’s Lot uses the Slink Gloves base and requires Level 70 with 95 Dexterity. Its standard modifiers include:
· Evasion: +80–120 to Evasion Rating
· Speed: 5–8% increased Attack and Cast Speed
· Mark Skills: 10–15% increased Cast Speed
· Damage: 30–50% increased Damage with Hits and Ailments against Marked Enemies
· Unique Defensive Effect: 8% of Damage from Hits is taken from the Marked Target’s Life before you
The combination makes the item particularly effective for characters that consistently maintain Marks on important targets. The increased damage directly improves performance against those enemies, while the unique defensive modifier gives the gloves their defining identity.
The most important modifier on Mercenary’s Lot is:
8% of Damage from Hits is taken from Marked Target’s Life before you.
Rather than functioning like conventional damage reduction, this mechanic shifts a portion of incoming hit damage away from the player. When a Marked enemy is available, 8% of the damage from a hit is removed from that enemy’s Life before the remaining damage reaches the player.
For example, if an incoming hit would normally deal 10,000 damage, approximately 800 damage can be taken from the Marked target first, leaving the player to receive the remaining portion.
This effectively creates an additional defensive layer against hit-based damage. The mechanic becomes especially valuable when fighting powerful single targets because the Marked enemy acts as a temporary source of damage absorption.
However, the effect is fundamentally dependent on having an appropriate Marked target. Players therefore need to consider Mark application, target availability, and encounter design when building around Mercenary’s Lot.
The defensive mechanic is only half of the gloves’ appeal. Mercenary’s Lot also provides 30–50% increased Damage with Hits and Ailments against Marked Enemies.
This bonus makes the gloves naturally suited to builds that already incorporate Mark Skills into their gameplay. Against bosses and other high-value targets, maintaining a Mark can simultaneously improve offensive output and provide additional protection.
The 10–15% increased Cast Speed for Mark Skills also supports this playstyle by making Mark application faster. Combined with the gloves’ general attack and cast speed bonus, Mercenary’s Lot can fit particularly well into fast-paced builds that frequently switch between Mark application and direct damage.
One of the most unusual interactions associated with Mercenary’s Lot involves Chaos Inoculation (CI).
Because the redirected portion of the damage is taken from the Marked target’s Life rather than directly dealing damage to the player’s character, the effect can bypass the normal interaction players might expect from Chaos Inoculation.
This becomes particularly significant in specialized PvP situations and encounters such as Hall of the Grandmasters. Some CI-based Grandmasters have only 1 maximum Life. If such a target is Marked, the redirected damage can consume its available Life, potentially resulting in an immediate kill.
This interaction demonstrates that Mercenary’s Lot is more than a conventional defensive unique. Its damage-transfer mechanic interacts with the game’s Life system in unusual ways, creating niche but powerful applications.
Mercenary’s Lot also has an interesting history involving Hardcore gameplay.
When the Mercenary mechanic became part of the core game, rogue Mercenaries appearing in maps could, under certain circumstances, spawn with Mercenary’s Lot equipped. This created a potentially lethal situation for hit-based characters.
If a player attacked a Mercenary wearing the gloves, part of the player’s own damage could effectively be redirected back through the gloves’ unique mechanic. Against characters capable of producing extremely large hit damage, the resulting damage could be devastating.
In Hardcore, where character death is permanent, this interaction created an especially dangerous scenario. A player could potentially kill an apparently ordinary enemy while simultaneously causing a lethal amount of redirected damage to their own character.
Grinding Gear Games subsequently addressed the problem, and enemy Mercenaries can no longer randomly equip Mercenary’s Lot in this way. The change removed one of the most dangerous unintended interactions associated with the gloves.
Mercenary’s Lot is a highly specialized unique rather than a universal upgrade. Its effectiveness depends heavily on whether a build can consistently Mark important enemies and take advantage of the additional damage and defensive mechanics.
It is particularly attractive for:
· Mark-focused bossing builds
· Hit-based characters fighting high-health targets
· Builds that benefit from increased Attack and Cast Speed
· Specialized PvP setups
· Players experimenting with unusual Life-based mechanics
· Characters looking for an alternative defensive layer against hit damage
For general mapping, the gloves may be less compelling if enemies die too quickly or Marks are not consistently maintained. In contrast, long boss encounters give Mercenary’s Lot much more opportunity to demonstrate its strengths.
Because unique items can play very different roles depending on the current league’s meta, players interested in experimenting with Mercenary’s Lot may also need to consider the broader Path of Exile economy. Currency is commonly required for acquiring gear, crafting upgrades, and assembling specialized builds.
Players looking to expand their budget can consider PoE Currency when planning purchases for a Mercenary’s Lot-focused setup. The exact investment required will depend on the league, item rolls, build archetype, and overall demand for the gloves.
The most important consideration when using Mercenary’s Lot is maintaining reliable Mark uptime. Without a Marked enemy, the gloves lose access to their defining offensive and defensive interactions.
Players should therefore evaluate:
1. Mark application: How quickly and reliably can the build Mark its primary target?
2. Single-target damage: Does the build benefit significantly from the increased damage against Marked enemies?
3. Defense: Can the redirected damage meaningfully improve survivability?
4. Target availability: Does the content consistently provide a suitable enemy to Mark?
5. Item opportunity cost: Are the unique gloves more valuable than a rare glove with stronger defensive or offensive affixes?
For bossing-oriented characters, the answers can make Mercenary’s Lot considerably more attractive than it initially appears.
Mercenary’s Lot stands out because its identity is built around a mechanic that changes the normal relationship between a player and a Marked enemy. Instead of treating a Mark purely as an offensive debuff, the gloves turn the target into a source of defensive mitigation while simultaneously increasing damage against it.
Its 8% damage-transfer mechanic, Mark-based damage bonus, increased Mark Skill Cast Speed, and unusual interaction with Chaos Inoculation make it one of the more mechanically distinctive unique gloves in Path of Exile. Although it is not designed for every build, players who build around Marks and challenging single-target encounters can find significant value in its specialized mechanics.
