Diablo 4 Guide Stop Wasting Obols Gold and Gems

Managing Obols, Gold, and Gem Fragments becomes much more important once your character reaches the higher stages of Season 14. All three resources are useful, but they shouldn't be treated the same way. If you're still gearing your character, spending them in the right order can save a lot of time and prevent resources from going to waste.

For most players, the basic priority is Obols first, Gem Fragments second, and Gold third. However, that order can change depending on your build and how far you have progressed.

What Obols Gold and Gem Fragments Are Used For

Each resource supports a different part of character progression, so the first step is understanding where your resources actually provide value.

Obols

Obols are mainly spent at the Purveyor of Curiosities to gamble for equipment. They are particularly useful when you are missing good Diablo 4 items in a specific slot or want additional chances at useful gear.

Best use: Target the equipment slot where your current item is weakest rather than gambling randomly.
Important: The Obol storage cap has been increased to 25,000, so you can hold much more than before, but reaching the cap still means additional Obol rewards are wasted. 
Good farming option: Escalating Nightmare Dungeon activities with Obol-focused rewards can help build your supply while progressing through endgame content.

Gold

Gold is the most widely used resource and supports many different systems throughout Diablo 4.

Main uses: Repairs, crafting, upgrading, and Masterworking.
Biggest concern: Endgame optimization can consume large amounts of Gold, especially when repeatedly upgrading equipment.
Best approach: Keep a reserve instead of spending everything on temporary gear or unnecessary upgrades.

Gem Fragments

Gem Fragments are primarily used to craft and upgrade higher-tier gems.

Best use: Upgrade the gems that directly benefit your current build.
Priority: Finish the important gems first instead of spreading resources across every possible gem.
Long-term value: Gem upgrades can provide consistent stat improvements once your core equipment is established.

The Best Spending Priority in Season 14

For a typical character that is still progressing through Torment difficulties, the following order is a good starting point:

Obols → Gem Fragments → Gold

This isn't a rule that every build has to follow, but it works well because each resource has a different limitation.

1. Spend Obols Before They Hit the Cap

Obols should generally come first because there is a limit to how many you can store.

Once you're getting close to 25,000, visit the Purveyor and spend some of them on the equipment slot you actually need. This keeps your Obol income flowing instead of wasting rewards after reaching the cap.

If your current weapon is already strong, for example, there is little reason to keep gambling for another weapon. Look at your rings, amulet, armor, or another weak slot and use the resource where it has a better chance of helping your character.

2. Use Gem Fragments for Real Build Improvements

Gem Fragments are the next priority because upgraded gems provide a straightforward improvement to your character.

Rather than trying to upgrade everything at once, start with the gems that are central to your build. Once those are in good shape, you can work toward the highest tiers available to your character.

Season 14 also provides stronger Gem Fragment rewards in higher-level content, making it easier for players who regularly push difficult Torment activities to continue improving their gems.

3. Keep Gold for Expensive Upgrades

Gold comes third mainly because it has so many uses.

You will eventually need large amounts for Masterworking and other endgame expenses, so having a reserve is more useful than spending it simply because you have a comfortable balance.

If an item is clearly temporary, avoid investing heavily in it. Save major Gold expenses for equipment that is strong enough to remain part of your build.

How Your Priority Changes During Progression

The three-resource priority isn't exactly the same throughout the season. Your needs change as your character moves from basic gearing to endgame optimization.

Early Torment

At this stage, equipment gaps are usually the biggest problem.

Use Obols to target weak equipment slots and improve your basic setup.
Use Gem Fragments to establish the important gems for your build.
Keep Gold available for repairs, crafting, and upgrades that provide an immediate benefit.

The goal here is simple: make the character strong enough to progress efficiently rather than chasing perfect gear.

Mid and Late Game

Once your core equipment is established, resource spending becomes more selective.

Obols: Focus on specific equipment slots and potential upgrades rather than random gambling.
Gem Fragments: Push the important gems toward the higher tiers that your build benefits from.
Gold: Start maintaining a larger reserve for Masterworking and other expensive endgame systems.

This is also the point where spending resources without a clear goal becomes much easier to notice.

End of Season

When your character is close to finished, there is less reason to hoard everything.

Spend Obols if you still have realistic gear upgrades to chase.
Finish important Gem Fragment upgrades if the gems will continue to benefit your build.
Use Gold on meaningful Masterworking or crafting improvements.

If you're no longer actively improving the character, sitting on a huge pile of seasonal resources doesn't provide much value.

How to Avoid Wasting Your Resources

Good resource management isn't just about deciding what to spend first. It's also about avoiding purchases that don't actually improve your character.

Don't Gamble Without a Target

Having a full Obol wallet doesn't mean you should gamble every equipment slot. Pick the area where your character needs improvement and concentrate your spending there.

Don't Upgrade Temporary Gear

If you're still replacing an item frequently, avoid putting a large amount of Gold or other resources into it. Wait until you have a piece of equipment that is likely to stay in your build.

Don't Upgrade Every Gem Immediately

If you're still experimenting with different builds, prioritize the gems you know you'll continue using. This prevents you from spending Gem Fragments on upgrades that become irrelevant after your next build change.

Don't Let Obols Sit at the Cap

This is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid. Check your Obol total periodically and spend some before reaching the maximum.

What to Expect From Season 15

Season 15 is worth keeping in mind, but it is better to treat upcoming information as preparation rather than a reason to stop playing your current character.

PTR and preview information can change before a new season officially launches, so there is little benefit in completely changing your Season 14 strategy based on unconfirmed details.

Gold is particularly worth watching because new progression and crafting systems can introduce additional costs. Building better Gold farming habits now is useful, but that doesn't mean you should stop investing in your Season 14 character.

For Obols and Gem Fragments, the safest approach is similar. Use them where they provide value now rather than assuming that every current resource will have exactly the same importance in the next season.

If you want the short version, remember:

• Obols first: Spend them before reaching the cap and target the gear slots that actually need improvement.
• Gem Fragments second: Upgrade the gems that directly support your current build instead of wasting resources on unnecessary changes.
• Gold third: Keep a healthy reserve for Masterworking, crafting, repairs, and other expensive endgame systems.

The order can change depending on your character. A build with fully upgraded gems has little reason to prioritize more Gem Fragments, while a character ready for serious Masterworking may need to put Gold first.

The important thing is to stop treating these resources as something that should simply accumulate. Use them when they can make a meaningful difference, and adjust your priorities as your Season 14 character gets closer to its final build.
