Rod Fergusson, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard Entertainment, has announced his departure from the company after five years. He joined Blizzard in early 2020 from The Coalition, where he had led development on the Gears of War series, to oversee Diablo projects during a turbulent period for the franchise.
In a post on X dated August 8, 2025, Fergusson shared the news directly:
"After five years of driving the Diablo franchise forward with four big launches, it's time for me to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what's next. The teams are set up for success, with an exciting slate of releases ahead. I'm incredibly proud of what we've built together and looking forward to what comes next for Diablo, and for me."
During his tenure, Fergusson was instrumental in shipping Diablo 2: Resurrected (2021), Diablo Immortal (2022), Diablo 4 (2023), and the upcoming Diablo 4 expansion Vessel of Hatred (set for release later in 2025). He emphasized that the Diablo teams are well-positioned for future success, though Blizzard has not yet named a successor or provided details on leadership changes.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across gaming communities:
This departure comes amid broader changes at Blizzard and Microsoft Gaming, following the 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard. While Fergusson hasn't indicated any connection to larger layoffs or restructurings, it aligns with a wave of executive shifts in the industry. For now, Blizzard has reaffirmed commitment to Diablo's roadmap, including ongoing updates for Diablo 4 and future expansions.
