Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
During the 2019–20 playoffs, Mahomes led the Chiefs to Super Bowl LIV, their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years, where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers for their first Super Bowl victory since 1970. Mahomes was awarded the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for his performance, becoming the second African-American quarterback to win the award after Doug Williams, and youngest overall. He is the third African-American quarterback after Doug Williams and Russell Wilson and the second youngest quarterback (24 years and 138 days) to win the Super Bowl after Ben Roethlisberger (23 years and 320 days) to win the Super Bowl.
Aaron Donald, Los Angeles Rams
During Week 3 against the Cleveland Browns, Donald recorded his first sack of the season on Baker Mayfield in the 20–13 road victory. However, six days after the game, he was fined $21,056 for a roughing the passer hit on Mayfield. Three weeks later against the San Francisco 49ers, Donald sacked Jimmy Garoppolo twice in the 20–7 loss. In the next game against the Atlanta Falcons, Donald recorded a strip sack on Matt Ryan and recovered the football in the 37–10 road victory. During Week 11 against the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football, Donald recorded two sacks, four tackles, and a pass defensed in a 17–7 victory, earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers
McCaffrey finished the 2019 season with 1,387 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns to go along with 116 receptions for 1,005 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns. This performance led to McCaffrey being selected for his first Pro Bowl, played on January 26, 2020. McCaffrey finished third in Offensive Player of the Year voting.
Michael Thomas, New Orleans Saints
Thomas finished the season with an NFL record 149 catches for 1725 yards and 9 touchdowns. In the NFC Wild Card Round against the Minnesota Vikings, Thomas caught 7 passes for 70 yards during the 26–20 overtime loss. On February 1, 2020, Thomas was awarded AP Offensive Player of the Year for his performance during the 2019 season, becoming the first wide receiver to win the award since Jerry Rice in 1993.
Bobby Wagner, Seattle Seahawks
In week 3 against the New Orleans Saints, Wagner recorded a team high 18 tackles in the 33–27 loss. In week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens, Wagner recorded a team high 13 tackles in the 30–16 loss. In week 8 against the Atlanta Falcons, Wagner recorded a sack on Matt Schaub and recovered a fumble lost by Devonta Freeman in the 27–20 win. In week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wagner recorded a team high 11 tackles and sacked Jameis Winston once in the 40–34 overtime win. In week 15 against the Carolina Panthers, Wagner recorded his first interception of the season off a pass thrown by Kyle Allen during the 30–24 win. In week 16 against the Arizona Cardinals, Wagner recorded a team high 13 tackles and sacked Kyler Murray once during the 27–13 loss.
